Legislative Advocacy

The 2019 Legislative session (the first session of the 57th Oklahoma Legislature) will reconvene on Monday, February 4, 2019, at 12:00 noon.

When the Oklahoma Legislature is in session, the AONP legislative team, led by Executive Director, Benny Vanatta, monitors events at the Capitol every day; meeting with legislators and scrutinizing legislation. We fight legislation that would harm NP practice and create and promote bills that advance NP practice in Oklahoma.

During the interim, from June through January, we maintain our vigil by working with legislators and staff on interim studies. Due to the short legislative session, interim studies are necessary, in-depth research of important issues that are conducted by committees to aid the legislators in the upcoming session that begins in February.

Legislative Bills and Updates

January 2019 Update: 2019 Legislative Session - Senate Bill 839

Good news! AONP has been working with Sen. Smalley to craft a committee substitute for Senate Bill 839 that moves us forward in achieving our legislative goals, and we’re happy to share the results of that work. Please note that the language for SB 839 that appears on the Senate website is not the final version of the bill. That bill will be changed to this committee substitute language when the bill is heard in committee.

October 2018 Update:

Click here to view the Pro-NP candidates in favor of FPA. The list details the legislative candidates who responded to the AONP survey and if their responses were favorable to Full Practice Authority. Incumbents are indicated with an asterisk(*). There may be times where multiple candidates are favorable to AONP. There may be others, both incumbents and candidates, that are favorable to our position but did not respond to our attempts to reach them. We hope you will do your own investigation. Ask us if you have any questions and we will attempt to guide you.

May 2018 Update:

Thank you to the hard work and dedication of state Sen. AJ Griffin and state Rep. Josh Cockroft, for their efforts to pass legislation to enact full practice authority in Oklahoma.

We encourage all NPs and APRNs to be involved in the upcoming elections and make sure that our elected officials understand the importance of full practice authority and how vitally important it is for Oklahomans in need of quality health care providers. As soon as the June 26th primaries are over, AONP will engage with and begin walks for candidates that will support this goal.

Join us February 12th, we need your help at the State Capitol during AONP’s Legislative Day to show the overwhelming support for the Committee Substitute of SB 839 among nurse practitioners across the state!

It’s not too late to register for next Tuesday’s event, as we have the opportunity to get rid of the senseless and outdated red tape that holds us back in providing Oklahomans with access to quality health care. We need you to make your voice heard and explain to your legislators the benefits that the Committee Substitute for SB 839 gives you as a nurse practitioner, your patients and your entire community.

Learn legislative strategy from AONP leadership and other supportive organizations like AARP Oklahoma and Americans for Prosperity.

Register today and join us at the Capitol on February 12th!

2019 Legislative Nurse of the Day

The Nurse of the Day program, sponsored by the Oklahoma Nurses Association (ONA), gives Nurse Practitioners an opportunity to bring advanced practice nursing to the policy makers, and provides an opportunity for NPs to learn more about the legislative process.

During the legislative session, many professional associations are trying to get legislators to take notice of their views. The Nurse of the Day program provides visibility and an opportunity for NP voices to be heard. The 2019 Legislative Session will begin in February, 2019 and we want to make sure that nurses are engaged and active in legislation that may affect nurses and nursing practice.

Victory! VA Rule grants veterans direct access to health care provided by NPs

The Department of Veterans Affairs released the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Final Rule that grants veterans direct access to health care provided by nurse practitioners in the VA.

AONP issues a "Call to Action" so members could submit comments to the Federal Register, members of Congress and the Secretary of the VA in support of this rule. Your voices were heard with 54,809 messages sent. Truly, the voice of nurse practitioners was heard loud and clear. We thank you for your ongoing grassroots support of this important issue.

The final rule includes NPs, CNSs, CNMs, but it excludes CRNAs at this time. Work will continue to encourage the VA to implement this policy for all APRNs.
